So you want to be a professional Steampunk? Even a professional maker or artist? It’s not impossible to live the dream but there’s a reason they call it a dream. We would love to help you out with tales of our experiences.

*By the way some personal information of the panelists was deleted for privacy sake of these Awesome Panels!*

'Don’t do it'
'Make allies not enemies'
'Dont watch movies and drive!'
'Let’s get off the tangent dragon'
'Makes the jump from day job to...'
'This becomes an obsession when it’s your job'
'Don’t be afraid to downsize'
'Do not pay to play!'

Magical History Panel at the 2018 Tucson Festival of books

March 11th, 2018

Join Gail Carriger, Beth Cato and Mindy Tarquini, all wonderful authors of novels filled with wonderous magic and mystery as they discuss their points of view on alternative earth histories where magic, the paranormal or time travel are real.

“Why use magic at all?”

“How d you know there wasn’t vampires and werewolves running around Victorian England?”

“I want to write about airships!”

"And that is Steampunk ladies and gentlemen!"

"...love steampunk and make it their own!"

This panel was moderated by our friend David Lee Summers!

NYT Bestseller Gail Carriger writes comedies of manners mixed with paranormal romance (and the sexy San Andreas Shifter series as G.L. Carriger). Her books include the Parasol Protectorate, Custard Protocol, and Supernatural Society series for adults, and the Finishing School series for young adults. She is published in many languages and has over a dozen NYT bestsellers. She was once an archaeologist and is fond of shoes, octopuses, and tea.

Beth Cato hails from Hanford, California, but currently writes and bakes cookies in a lair west of Phoenix, Arizona. She shares the household with a hockey-loving husband, a numbers-obsessed son, and a cat the size of a canned ham.

She's the author of THE CLOCKWORK DAGGER (a 2015 Locus Award finalist for First Novel) and THE CLOCKWORK CROWN (an RT Reviewers' Choice Finalist) from Harper Voyager. Her novella WINGS OF SORROW AND BONE was a 2016 Nebula nominee. BREATH OF EARTH begins a new steampunk series set in an alternate history 1906 San Francisco.

Raised by traditional people in a modern world, Mindy Tarquini is a second-generation Italian American who grew up believing dreams are prophecy, the devil steals lost objects, and an awkward glance can invite the evil eye.

She’s served as assistant editor with the Lascaux Review, also Spinetingler Magazine, and is a member of the Perley Station Writers’ Colony. Her work has won recognition from the Philadelphia City Paper, the Maui Writer’s Conference, and the Oklahoma Writer’s Federation.

A native Philadelphian, Mindy packed up her pizza stone and westward-ho’d. She now resides in Phoenix, where she divides her time between writing and wrestling with her pasta maker.

Mindy loves writing heroines with special powers. Alas, she has none herself. Find out more at her Amazon writers page at https://www.amazon.com/Mindy-Tarquini/e/B01DHO8THG/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1520798670&sr=1-2-ent

David Lee Summers is an author, editor and astronomer living somewhere between the western and final frontiers in Southern New Mexico. He is the author of ten novels. His short stories and poems have appeared in numerous magazines including Cemetery Dance, Realms of Fantasy, Star*Line, and The Santa Clara Review. David is also the founding editor of Tales of the Talisman Magazine. When he's not writing, he operates telescopes at Kitt Peak National Observatory.

Happy International Women’s Day!

March 8th, 2018

Our message for International Women's Day

Meet the lady Gamers Kellie and Jocelyne who want to talk about International Women's Day (IWD) and were celebrating it this year at Tucson Games and Gadgets. On March 8 and I think this is a new tradition for every year! Today on International Women's Day we commemorate the movement for women's rights.

While the first observance of a Women's Day was held on February 28, 1909 in New York, the 1910 International Woman’s Conference suggested March 8 to become an "International Woman's Day."

Please be grateful for all the ladies at the gaming tables and lets all be allies to each other while sharing and respecting each other at the table and outside the hobbies we love!

And the core book here:
“I’m getting a signal.” Dalil’s voice crackled over the com. “We’re close.” The navigator gazed into the darkness ahead, his face ghostly pale in the cold glow from the tabula in his hands.
Radwa nodded silently for her comrades to advance, approaching the strange ruins in the moonscape. The only sound they could hear was their own breathing through the air filters, and the soft crunch under their boots. The floodlights from the freighter Narzalus behind them cast long shadows of the trio.
“Something is wrong, boss.” The sharp voice of Jhara broke the silence. Her vulcan rifle hummed as the tall woman from Sadaal activated her weapon. Without turning, Radwa raised her hand to still her friend.
“Easy, Jha,” she whispered over the com.
The explorers shone their suit-mounted flashlights over the ruins. Alien signs were carved into the smooth dark surfaces. In the light, they seemed to be glowing.
Something slowly unraveled before them. A darkness rose from the surface of the dead moon, reaching towards the starry sky above them.
“Mercy of the Icons!” Radwa gasped, and felt a chill spread throughout her body.
Coriolis – The Third Horizon is a science fiction role-playing game from the makers of critically acclaimed Mutant: Year Zero (six-time nominee and winner of a Silver Ennie for Best Rules 2015).
•Create your unique player character – including skills, talents, gear and relationships – in mere minutes.

Reckless Ambitions (The Medford Family Chronicles Book 1)
The beloved, highly respected, and automatically obeyed Palamaran Emperor John Cardillion III suddenly has died without naming a successor. He has four very powerful sons, An Arch Cleric, a Fighter, a Wizard and a Merchant Prince (aka thief), who are eager to slay each other and claim their father’s Ruby Throne. Earl Thomas Medford, the former Emperor’s best friend and Commander of the Imperial Guard, has to decide which royal brother to support for the throne and marry his deliciously gorgeous only daughter too. Earl Medford intends to either avert or win a bloody and vicious civil war.
Meanwhile Earl Medford’s daughter Christina has fallen hopelessly in love with one of the many Imperial Guard officers, Nick Armand. Christina and her best friend, Abigail Theosoar, do everything they can to hide this passionate romance. The not-so-simple Palace Gardener, Dr. Andrew Numil, who has his own agendas, discovers Christina’s secret and uses it to his advantage. Abigail Theosoar’s father, former gladiator and tavern owner Robert Theosoar, falls under a terrible curse with politics as the new Lord Mayor of the Palamaran Capitol.
Finally, Professor Oliver Wendell Enalan, a middle-aged Illusionist spellcaster from the Gamemasters University, finds new psionic abilities within himself as he falls in love with a beautiful Elven refugee Princess. The Gamemasters University, of which Professor Enalan is employed, is dedicated to searching the limitless multiverse for new and exciting games to play augmenting their magical powers. Will Enalan be able to defend the GMU mission and fulfill his destiny? Is the price of ultimate power bitter loveless loss? You shall judge in the end.

Tucson Comic Con 2017 Too perfect Heroes

January 29th, 2018

What makes a protagonist great? What makes a good hero? I personally enjoy a hero with some real world issues and circumstance. Also I apologize in advance for the sick sniffling crowd around me I tried to clean it up as best I could.

Outpost Siberia Playtest and Review

January 22nd, 2018
We crack open the beautiful Tin of Outpost Siberia!
Join Jaaz, Kellie, Joclyne and I as  we learn a little russian, we have some drinks and plenty of 'In soviet russia...' jokes! Join us as we play our international group of outpost adventurers.
*Please be advised we were provided this game by IDW Games who sent me a copy of “Outpost: Siberia” for the purposes of this review,  but as always the opinions expressed are honest, open opinionaedand our own!*
Please anyone fluent in Russian let us know is we are saying it right ;)
"Welcome to Outpost 1, an observatory in the isolated frozen tundra of Siberia! My and my team have been studying the area, but last night a massive storm set in, bringing with it a pack of nightmarishly strange creatures. Now, trapped by the weather and these beasts our only hope is the use our meager resources to defend ourselves and wait out the storm. Ration our vodka carefully and we may see the sun again!"
-Outpost: Siberia
To say surviving Outpost Siberia is a challenge is the understatement of the year. You will die, over and over again in new ways. Sometimes it will be of thirst, other times you'll perish in the horns of a siberia moose or some mutant snow beast. But rest assured, you will meet your end in the cold Siberian snow and there is nothing you can do about it.
But is it fun or frustrating?
Publisher: IDW Games
Game Design: Jon Gilmour and Daryl Andrews
Art: Ron Joseph, Jay Fotos and Matthew Sweeny
Players: 2-6
Duration: 30 minutes
Age: 12+
Time to learn: 15 minutes
Board Game Types: Cooperative Game, Hand Management Game, Survival Horror Game
"This is easier then Klingon!"
"Keep killing the Yeti!"
"what are the odds we get another threat"
"It's a bad horror movie"
Check out our Parteon page tomorrow for the Alt Rules I came up with!
It ranks a 3 on the D20 scale :(
But the Tin it comes in and the art is great!
